Second instar

The Eri silkworms are continuing to grow and some have changed into their second instar. These guys are just about a quarter inch long.
See the one to the left of center with a white head instead of a black one? That's a second instar caterpillar. More yellow than the others because he took a break from eating to make the change. When they are well-fed (i.e. stuffed with leaves), they are greenish, but they turn yellow again if they stop eating. One of the petri dishes of caterpillars finished almost all their leaves yesterday night and let me know with a bunch of yellow cats in the morning. They all seemed to do well once their leaf supply was replenished.
